Week 33 - Summer Term - 13 June 2025

“Developing the whole child, spiritually, mentally and physically in a caring Christian                                             environment through close links to the Church and Community”

                                   Friday 13th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It’s been a busy and exciting week in school!
This week saw our Class 1 children taking part in the official ‘Phonics Screening Check’, whilst Class 4 completed their ‘Statutory Multiplication Check’. Well done to all of them for their focus and determination — we’re very proud of their efforts.

Our older children met with some ‘past staff’ as they gathered their information about the school over time. Mrs Laycock (a lady in her 90’s) shared her experiences about being based at the junior school further down Newcastle Avenue and Mrs Lambley, senior midday for many years, who had held her post at both schools.

Class 5 had a fantastic time during their Greek Day on Tuesday, fully immersing themselves in ancient history. As a well-earned reward for showing consistent kindness and completing their ‘100 square of kindness’, they enjoyed pizza making yesterday — a delicious treat by all accounts!

It was a pleasure to meet the parents and carers of our new Reception starters on Wednesday evening. We’re thrilled to announce that Reception will be full in September, and due to high demand, we currently have a waiting list — a testament to the strength and popularity of our school community.

Looking ahead, we’re just over a week away from the first of our centenary celebrations. Thank you to everyone who has completed the link to provide permission for children to take part — please make sure any outstanding forms are completed so that we know who is able to play in the music concert.

Each class has now received their own time capsule, and I’m looking forward to seeing the thoughtful and creative contributions the children make. These will be a lovely legacy for future generations to enjoy.
A quick reminder: On Monday 23rd June, we will be taking the children back in time! We would love to see as many pupils as possible dressed in Edwardian-style clothing, helping us mark 100 years in style.

Sporting News

A big well done to the 12 Class 6’s who competed in the orienteering competition. As a team they finished in 5th place, out of 13 schools, and our top scoring pair Thomas and Salim finished in a fantastic 13th place out of 78. Well done to all.

Platinum Award

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the ‘School Games Platinum Mark Award’ for the 2024/25 academic year. The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust.  It is designed to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.  We are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.  My thanks extend to Miss Burgoyne for leading on this application this year.

News from the Classes

Class Reception

This week Class Reception have been continuing to find about insects using the story ‘Superworm’.  They have looked at ‘The Snail by Henri Matisse’ and have created their own snail collages and some 3d hungry caterpillars.  They have been writing some super sentences all about what they could see in the garden. In maths they have been continuing to find out how they can share easily between two or more groups.

Class One

This week, Class 1 have been working brilliantly in English as they explore the story 'Shouty Arthur at the seaside' by Angie Morgan. They have really enjoyed diving into the setting, especially the rockpool, and have been using some fantastic adjectives to describe what they see—like ‘sparkly shells’, ‘olive seaweed’, and ‘bumpy rocks’. Alongside this, they have been learning how to use conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’ to extend their sentences and add more detail. They are becoming excellent story tellers, and they are loving joining in with the 'Shouty' parts of the story.

Class Two

This week in RE, Class 2 began Godly play. They began with the story of Isaac and his sons.  The children listened to Claire re-enacting the story with props and were encouraged to think about key moments in the story and ask wondering questions.  Once back in the classroom, the children built and drew scenes from the story using Lego and pastels whilst continuing to think more deeply about the story and its meaning.

Class Three

Class 3 have been busy this week starting their writing; a narrative based on ‘Escape from Pompeii’. The children have been generating ideas and getting into the characters. Their vocabulary is building, and they are choosing words accurately to describe. In maths, the children have been learning the differences between horizontal, vertical, parallel, and perpendicular lines. For science, the children had to work as a class to set up an experiment to test friction. It involved balloons and various threads; the children were able to observe the distance and describe which thread had the most/least friction.

Class Four

On Monday, the class went to Gainsborough Old Hall as part of their Tudors learning. During the day, they participated in a workshop where they had to prepare and participate in a banquet for King Henry VIII. The children all dressed up in Tudor outfits and really threw themselves in to the acting. A great day was had by all.  In English this week, the children have been writing a set of instructions for Tudor gingered bread. They first had a go at making the gingered bread before writing their instructions focusing on adverbials and expanded noun phrases. In maths Class 4 have been doing some final revision of their times tables. They then completed they multiplication test. They have all worked incredibly hard on their times table tests and should be proud of the progress they have made.

Class Five

Class 5 took a trip back to Ancient Greece this week when they were visited by none other than Zeus, King of the Gods, and his trusty lightning bolt. The children were immersed in a day of myth writing and re-enacting, discovering facts and taking votes democratically before re-creating their own Olympic games. When asked what their favourite part was, it was a resounding ‘everything’! The girls soon discovered that they would not have had the same rights as men if they lived in Athens- although there was more art and culture there, whereas in the fighting machine that was the Spartan city state, they would have had more rights.

In science, the children compared the lifecycles of amphibians and insects, including discussing the advantages and disadvantage of undergoing the dramatic transformation of metamorphosis and what happens when cold-blooded animals get too cold. They have also been using this scientific knowledge to write scientific explanations of the lifecycles of amphibians.

The class were also visited by some past staff members, Mrs. and Mr. Lambley and Mrs. Laycock who very kindly took the time to recall their memories of St. Annes’s gone by; these recollections will be used as part of our centenary learning later this term.

Class Six

In English Class 6 are using their science knowledge, to create first person funny narratives from a blood cell's point of view. They are going to take their audience on a journey through the circulatory system. This week they also participated in Web Warriors with Mrs Leasy, who was back to share knowledge about how to stay safe online and discuss the risks they may face.  Children also engaged in art, doing their observational sketches of everyday objects, using carbon paper and tracing paper to help support their drawing.

Class 6 have also had some play practice this week and learned new moves for the many musical numbers. Also, they have been working to complete project work for the centenary celebration, involving the whole school. This week children also engaged in 'The Big Talk' and proved themselves to be mature and sensible during the session.
