Autumn 1: Friday 3 October 2025
Dear Parents & Carers,
What a busy and exciting week it has been!
Monday’s Team |
Tuesday’s team! A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Harvest Festival on Tuesday, and for your generous donations which will be sent on to the local branch of Hope. As always, it was a delight to hear the children singing ‘The Little Red Tractor’, and this year Class 5’s artwork was a real highlight of the celebration. I am especially grateful to Miss Burgoyne, assisted by Mrs Unwin and Mrs Wilkinson, for leading the Class 5 trip to Hathersage. The photos show just how much the children have enjoyed the beautiful landscape, and Miss Burgoyne reports that they were a wonderful group to take. We hope they treasure these memories for many years to come. This week I have also been showing prospective applicants around the school as we recruit for our Deputy Headteacher position. The process is underway, and I will keep you updated alongside the governors once there is further news. The role is set to begin in January, in line with teacher contracts. We have also welcomed several visiting families who are considering joining us next September in Reception class. Please do spread the word about our school, particularly as our admissions criteria have changed for next year—we now have a designated catchment area. As part of our efforts to raise the school’s social media profile, we have been sharing photos from recent events, including residential trips, on the school’s Facebook page. Please do follow us to help us grow our online community. Finally, I am delighted to share that together we raised an incredible £525 for Macmillan last Friday afternoon. Thank you to everyone who supported this event—it was a wonderful occasion that really captured our strong community spirit.
Snacks and Meal Bookings A gentle reminder that we do need parents to book dinners and snacks, afterschool, and breakfast club. This helps us to ensure that ordering and staffing numbers are correct. Push Notifications Keep a check on your Arbor App messages – these should float up as a push notification at the top of your phone. News from the Classes
Class Reception This week in Reception, the children have been learning all about Harvest. They enjoyed listening to Oliver’s Vegetables and Seren’s Harvest, which helped to support their understanding of where our food comes from and why Harvest is celebrated. The children explored a wide variety of vegetables, using their senses to describe how they look, feel, and smell. They also used the vegetables creatively to print colourful patterns in art. There were some great discussions about their likes and dislikes when it comes to different vegetables. In maths, the focus was on size and weight. The children practised comparing and ordering objects from smallest to largest. Class One This week, Class 1 have been developing their observational drawing skills in Art. They explored natural objects with spiral patterns and used these to improve their mark-making techniques. The children studied shells carefully, taking their time to draw the details before adding colour with water-soluble pens. By gently adding water, they were able to blend and disperse the colours, experimenting with different shades and tones to bring their artwork to life. Class Two Class 2 have been busy this week learning how to count in 2's, 5's, 10, and 3's! They were able to spot patterns and fill in missing numbers. In writing children have been learning all about Florence Nightingale and gathering facts for their biographies. Children enjoyed singing their harvest songs and showing off their wonderful artwork at this weeks’ Harvest Festival at the church and they made a great effort to bring in their food donations. During their music lesson this week they 'improvised' by making up their own rhymes to the song 'Down by the Bay.' Also, in RE children created a story board showing the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. Our history lesson has seen us look into what a classroom was like during Victorian times and answer the question, would we rather have a modern-day classroom or a Victorian classroom? In computing, we have continued to explore our mouse skills and resizing images and looking into barcodes and what they are used for.
Class Three It has been a busy week in Class 3, starting with the children completing their big write in English. They were tasked with writing their own story and used the story started of the character Max falling down another hole. In maths, Class 3 have started their addition and subtraction maths blocks focusing on adding and subtracting 1's, 10's and hundreds. The children also focused on Florence Price, a famous composer, as part of black history month.
Class Four In art, Class 4 have studied the illustrator Laura Carlin. They appraised her illustrations in the book 'King of the Skies' noticing a variety of techniques she had used. They recapped their Class 3 learning by using charcoal to illustrate their own life scene as a warm-up to illustrating a poem as the unit progresses. Class Five Class 5 are on residential this week. More news from them next week. Class Six Class 6 have been very busy this week building up their shared write narrative based on Letters from the Lighthouse. The children had to get into character, recall the features of a narrative and see how to improve to a Class 6 level. Their writing is improving all the time and children are working on the key skills of proofreading, editing and improving with more independence. In Maths, they have been continuing their work on multiplication and division. In PE, the focus has changed from Tag Rugby to Orienteering. It was fantastic to see the children work in pairs to navigate maps to identify key areas on the school site. This is great preparation for an upcoming orienteering task at PGL.
Finally, it was the Harvest celebration, all the Class 6 children stepped up to be the role models for the school in the first of the main church services this year.
